Taiwan's Smart Healthcare Advances into Malaysia, Creating a New Mega Business

(Kuala Lumpur, June 5, CNA) Taiwan's smart biomedicine sector is making inroads into Malaysia's local supply chain for smart healthcare, dental, and bone materials. Vice Superintendent Wu Chieh-Liang of Taichung Veterans General Hospital said today that smart healthcare is Taiwan's pride, aiming to establish a new Mega Business.

30th Malaysian Private Healthcare Association (APHM) International Healthcare Conference and Exhibition began yesterday in Kuala Lumpur, spanning a 3-day exhibition. The event focuses on themes such as future healthcare, emerging legal trends and insights, and path forward. 16 Taiwanese exhibitors are participating in a national pavilion format.

Dr. Wu Chieh-Liang, in an interview with CAN today, stated that Taiwan's ICT sector has developed IoT devices and medical information systems. Through information transmission technology, Taiwan generates medical massive data, which serves as material for smart healthcare and integrates in molecular biology, genetics, and cellular therapy. These significant advancements and cutting-edge developments provide Taiwan's healthcare sector with opportunities to advance internationally and collaborate with countries in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.

He pointed out that Taiwan's IT and chip manufacturing lead rapid development of AI globally, while smart healthcare represents another new frontier. The widespread of healthcare, combined with medical and information technologies, are creating a new healthcare industry in Taiwan, which will also serve as a 'New Mega Business', caring not only for Taiwanese but also extending its reach to people worldwide.

Dr. Wu Chieh-Liang believes that Taiwan has over 20 medical centers across northern, central, southern, and eastern regions, nearly 400 regional hospitals, and numerous clinics. Healthcare in rural areas is supported by ICT infrastructure, and telemedicine is a key focus for future.

He mentioned that under government guidance, medical centers and hospitals in Taiwan are committed to developing smart healthcare and cutting-edge medical technologies. He hopes that such products will have opportunity to be introduced into hospitals in Malaysia.

Furthermore, Lu, Yung Chieh, Director-General of Beitou Health Management Hospital in Taipei City, cited health check-ups as an example, illustrating trend of integrating health examinations with tourism development in Southeast Asian countries. She noted that Taiwan has focused on high-end imaging and precision health check-ups targeting overseas in recent years. Affordable pricing is one of the best advantages in Taiwan, with health check-up costs in Singapore approximately four times higher and in Hong Kong about three to four times higher than Taiwan.

Sixteen Taiwanese companies including Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Acer Smart Healthcare, and Huede Healthtech Co., Lid. joined forces in a national pavilion at the exhibition. They introduced the concept of medical AI, employing revolutionary artificial intelligence-assisted predictive software to identify risks of acute kidney injury in advance. Additionally, Taiwan pioneered smart healthcare equipment utilizing deep learning technology for early prevention of osteoporosis, which has garnered significant attention from Malaysian healthcare professionals in recent days.

According to data from Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), Bureau of Foreign Trade under Ministry of Economic Affairs, in collaboration with TAITRA, organized the "2024 Taiwan Smart Healthcare Mission to Malaysia and Vietnam" to participate in 30th Malaysia Private Healthcare Association International Medical and Healthcare Exhibition & Conference.
